With support from several organizations, the Wayuu Taya Foundation carried out
its VI health day in Mara, located in La Popular sector in the Km 28, on the way to El Mojan, to the north of the state of Zulia.

This Friday 27th at around 8:00 AM, the Wayuu Taya team along with
Caritas Maracaibo, doctors from the Sociedad Venezolana de Puericultura y
Pediatría, the medicine faculty of la Universidad del Zulia, Hospital Coromoto and
Ambulatorio las Cruces, plus members of the Red Cross – Zulia section and
students from La Universidad del Zulia, escorted by members of the Zulia police
department, took off to Mara, located in the La Popular sector in the Km 28, on the
way to El Mojan, to carry out the VI Mara Health Day 2018.

The big churuata at the school Nerio Emiro Semprun Polanco “Tepichi Talatshi”
was arranged to receive over 800 people who were attended by doctors and
medicine students. Some of the services provided were their nutritional assessing,
vaccinations, pediatric attention, gynecology, lab tests, pharmaceutic services and
general medicine.

The classrooms were improvised as medical modules to attend over 180 children
who were assessed according to their size, weight and brachial circumference to
indicate their ideal nutrition state in the pediatric area. Over 190 vaccines were
applied to boys, girls and adults, among which, the most frequent were
pentavalent, polio, double viral, toxoid, hepatitis B and diphtheria. In the
gynecology area, over 20 women were attended.

Dr. George Alliey, renowned orthopedist, was responsible to evaluate, along his
colleague, Dr. Roberto González, over 60 cases which required their respective
attention; in the laboratory area, approximately 90 people got routine tests done.

An entire multidiscipline team made performing this event successful. Hairdressers
from the zone lent their services for free, where over 50 people were able to benefit
from them.

The pharmacy area was attended directly by members of Caritas Maracaibo; its
coordinator, Sister Amarilis Ibarra, was responsible for giving the patients the
medicine needed to cover their treatment entirely for free.

“We need more days like this, that allow us to get our medications at once,
because there is no point in going to a hospital or CDI and not find the medicine we
need; we need help, we don’t have money, there is no medicine, there is no food,
there isn’t anything”, said Militza González, a resident from the sector.

The children enjoyed a day of medical attention, while the representatives of the
Red Cross – Zulia Section, gave talks about health, wellbeing and disease prevention. They also painted the children’s little faces and colored with them while they were waiting for their family members to get medical attention as well.

Before ending the VI Mara Health Day 2018, the Wayuu Taya Team along with
Caritas Maracaibo, offered a mega sancocho humanitario, feeding over 800 people
who went to the health event.
